I FIND THE OUTER SENSHI BORING.
When I was younger, I was totally in love with the idea of the bitchy, aloof, and generally untouchable girls that were the outer senshi. Most of my friends at the time agreed with me that Haruka and Michiru were too cool for school, Setsuna was awesome in a tragic sort of way, and Hotaru kicked so much ass.
As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve come to realize that they’re really not what I love about Sailor Moon. They come in for a few minutes, say some (if they’re Michiru) really innuendo-laden things, and save the day much akin to Tuxedo Mask. The thing is, there’s no interest for that really. There’s not a ton of episodes that are JUST about the Outers. Not like how in PGSM, there’s a lot of episodes carefully investigating each and every friendship and dynamic. I think that this is really important to a show’s development of its characters.
My boyfriend told me that when he was in school, he HATED the outers because they were the ‘stuck up older bitches’. I can see why the were supposed to be unlikable in Sailor Moon S and even in StarS, but they introduced a lot of more mature themes into the show that are both interesting, but boring as you grow up.
As an adult, I understand alternative sexuality in a way that a child would not. Haruka and Michiru are the most stereotypical lesbian couple to ever grace the animated screen. I find that their very rigid gender roles really limit the perspective of what it means to be a gay woman and still be a superhero. While Michiru is beautiful and
says hilarious embarrassing and overtly sexual thingsfunny, her character is rather flat. Haruka has more depth, but a lot of unfinished questions with regards to her character. We know her origin story, but not really. Why is she so rigidly masculine? Is Michiru just fitting that same rigidity within her appearance and mannerisms because Haruka is so masculine? If the show had examined these sorts of questions, I think I would still love the outers, but they’re so one-dimensional for all of Super and in StarS their role is reduced to saving the day/comic relief/kicking Seiya’s ass for touching Usagi that they’re just really boring.
And one more thing! Why is everyone OBSESSED with Hotaru? She’s not that cool, I don’t get it.
TL;DR - Setsuna is the most awesomest outer senshi and I’d cast someone amazing like Olivia Wilde to play her.
And that chick from the closer to play Michiru. Somehow. Even though she’s old.
Ellen could play Haruka. Just cause.
I’m just reblogging to address your input on Haruka and Michiru’s “stereotypical” roles.
Although Haruka is potrayed as a more masculine female, she still shows bits of femininity throughout the show. She would be considered a butch lesbian, perhaps, but that hardly makes her “stereotypical”. Many a lesbian takes on a more masculine demeanor, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t see her griping about wearing the senshi uniform or anything like that. She just likes riding cars and has short hair. End of story.
Michiru is shown as the more femme type girl, I’ll give you that much. She likes playing an instrument, wearing dresses, and swimming. But…I do that stuff too. Does that make me a “stereotypical” lesbian? :/ How about my girlfriend?
All because Naoko placed these two personas together doesn’t mean she was trying to fill some “typical” gap; the kind of lesbian relationship people are familiar with is “scary” enough for most viewers. A lot of people have a misunderstanding that ALL lesbians are butch, to start. They don’t consider the possibility of a more feminine lesbian even existing. So Michiru being how she is in itself is a good thing, in my eyes.
I find Naoko VERY brave for even including them in her storyline. We really can’t complain about the “type” of lesbians she created. Who cares. Both “types” exist in the world, as do thousands of others. Lesbians, gays, heterosexuals; you name it. No one should be placed into a category. People are together because they love each other. It doesn’t matter what they look like or what their personalities are like.
And lastly, if you haven’t noticed, almost NONE of the Sailor Moon characters have a backstory. Almost all of their designs are “flat”. She didn’t do too much I think because she didn’t want to overwhelm the story line with 9 planet’s worth of backgrounds. :/
Sorry if I sound a little irritated. I just find this post kind of insulting. Dx
